  2. Hello Dena & Class,

Since it's Father's Day weekend, and I am a father, I thought I would reflect and write my first complete blog on what I learned from my father, and what I beleive being a responsible father entails.

First and foremost, I learned a lot watching my father as young boy growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, known primarily for it's farming and livestock production. I saw him as a hard worker, and responsible provider for our family of eight, in which I was the 7th sibling. Keep in mind as you read his accomplishments, that he only had an 8th grade education. He was a praying man of faith, and read the Bible to us every Sunday morning before church. A foundation that I built on as a young father.

What I recall is that he worked at an airport plant that mass produced parts for major airlines. Then he worked his way into the pharmacutical industry, and became a pharmacists, filling prescriptions. Message to deadbeat Dads, he never missed a day from work, so he could provide for his family and purchase a home(which he did on one income in the 60's)!

One funny thing my Mother told me, was that he was offered to drive a company car(back in 1969), but he was too nervous to drive. After attempting to overcome his lack of confidence to drive, he quickly returned the company vehicle much to the dismay of the company after a couple of accidents. They continued to offer him the car, but he refused time and time again, choosing rather to walk or use public transportation.

He worked from 8am to 8pm 5 days a week, but still found time to come to our sporting events or any activites we were involved in. He and my mother were my biggest fans when I starred in both baseball and basketball. You can't imagine what it does to a kids confidence when your parents save your sports articles, and brag to everyone about you! Even when you lose, you can't lose with that type of support.

Thye have both passed on, and how I miss them dearly, but the legacy of responsible parenting lives on me. I have since raised five children,
who my wife and I gave the same type of support and encouragement in whatever they endeavored to do. Parenting I've discovered, never ends!

Getting a proper education was always a priority in our family if you kept good grades, then you could participate in sports or any extra-curricular activites. Of course doing your chores, and respecting your parents, as well as one another will get you far in life.

There is so much more to share, but you can't get it all in one blog. I must say we must've done something right, as next weekend I will be walking my 2nd oldest daughter down the ailse to give her away on her wedding day! I feel honored to be a father on this Father's Day because of what I've learned, and continue to learn.

    "Happy Father's Day"
